Timber Building Connection Details

In the StatiCAD program, timber building calculations can be performed in compliance with the 2018 earthquake code and the Design, Calculation and Construction Principles for Timber Buildings (ABTHYE) published in the Official Gazette No. 32499 dated 24.03.2024.

Timber shear walls (Light Frame Wall Systems) are entered in the program with options for single or double-sided cladding. Edge studs, intermediate studs, top plates, bottom plates, and intermediate blocking members are generated. Timber floors are entered as floor sheathing, floor joists, and horizontal blocking beams. Independent timber beams and timber columns are also entered. Wind and snow loads are defined.

In the analysis, the program automatically defines the 87 load combinations required by the code for timber buildings — accounting for gravity loads, earthquake loads, and snow loadings — automatically calculates earthquake loads and member internal forces. For timber shear wall elements, it automatically calculates the shear capacity in accordance with TBDY2018 and reports the adequacy status. Timber member checks are performed in accordance with the Design by Resistance section of ABTHYE: Tension Stress Parallel to Grain, Limit State Check Under Bending, Lateral Buckling Limit State, Compression Stress Parallel to Grain, Shear Stress Parallel to Grain, Rolling Shear Stress, Torsional Moment Effect, Combined Effects (Bending Moment and Axial Forces), and Compression Perpendicular to Grain — all while accounting for moisture and size modification factors. In the program, timber elements can be defined within a timber structural system or within other structural systems (masonry or reinforced concrete). Additionally, if desired, cross-section and deflection checks for beams can be performed in accordance with TS647.

However, connection calculations for timber elements (nailed, stapled, screwed, bolted, dowel-keyed, Punched Metal Plate, Split Ring and Shear Plate, and Toothed Plate connections) are not available in the current version. Work on this topic has begun, and in the meantime, both paid and free connection design software options available for use are listed below.
