Timber Beams in a Historical Building Restoration Project

Question: In historical buildings, timber round beams of 15–17 cm thickness are placed beneath the slab at intervals of 20–30 cm in a given direction (e.g. x-x). Then, to counteract the deflection of the beams over long spans, timber round beams (Hezen) of 22–25 cm thickness are placed perpendicular to these (y-y direction) at wider intervals. After that, a timber floor is nailed on top. In addition, all of these beams are embedded in the walls. How can such a definition be made in your software?

Answer:

In the StatiCAD V6 update

Calculations can be performed using timber material and polygon cross-section assignments.

In the StatiCAD-Yigma V5 Pro update

You define the slabs as reinforced concrete slabs, and the round beams and hezen beams as rectangular reinforced concrete beams. If timber posts (dikme) are present, you also define them as rectangular reinforced concrete beams.
V5 Pro and Ultimate versions have full integration features with SAP2000. You can export the structural model online to SAP2000 and import the analysis results (axial force, shear force, moment) computed in SAP2000 back into StatiCAD, allowing the program to automatically perform wall design checks in accordance with the earthquake code.
After exporting the structural model to SAP2000, you can change the cross-section (section) properties of the beams so that the round material (material) definitions are set to timber. You can perform the same operation for slabs and timber columns as well. After importing the results back into StatiCAD following this change, the program will automatically perform the wall design checks.
The design verification of the timber elements may need to be carried out separately based on the SAP2000 static analysis results.
We do not believe there will be any issue regarding acceptance when you describe these changes and procedural steps in detail in the technical report you will prepare.
