What Is RC Building Performance Analysis?

The seismic safety of an existing reinforced concrete building is measured not by the force-based approach used in new building design, but by how much the members will deform under earthquake and whether these deformations stay within safe limits. TBDY 2018 Chapter 15 defines this assessment: the knowledge level is determined from the information collected on the building, the seismic demand is calculated, the damage region is found for every column, beam and shear wall, and a building performance level verdict is given as Limited Damage, Controlled Damage or Collapse Prevention.

The linear method provides a quick and sufficient assessment for many buildings, but it does not show in which order and by how much members yield. In the deformation-based assessment and design (ŞGDT) approach, nonlinear pushover analysis tracks the formation of plastic hinges step by step; at the seismic demand, the plastic rotation of each hinge is compared with the damage limits of the code.

StatiCAD runs this entire chain automatically on the same project: material models, section analysis, pushover curve, seismic demand, damage tables and the building verdict. The result is a calculation report that states the rationale of the verdict clearly and is ready for review.

What Does StatiCAD Do in RC Performance Analysis?

All steps of existing RC building assessment, from linear assessment to multi-mode pushover.

Assessment with the Linear Calculation Method

  • Section capacities with existing material strengths and the knowledge level factor (comprehensive 1.0 / limited 0.75)
  • Demand/capacity ratios of columns, beams and shear walls under unreduced seismic effects
  • Ductile and brittle member classification, shear capacity check
  • Storey-by-storey building performance level and rationale with the 15.8 criteria

Nonlinear Pushover Analysis

  • TBDY Annex 5A material models: Mander confined and unconfined concrete, reinforcing steel with strain hardening
  • Moment–curvature with the fiber model; two axes in columns, flange effect in beams and separate positive/negative capacities
  • Lumped plastic hinge; elastic–perfectly plastic or strain-hardening (bilinear) hinge option
  • Event-to-event solver: every hinge formation is captured exactly
  • TBDY direction combinations: ±X ± 0.3Y and ±Y ± 0.3X, eight directions

Seismic Demand and Damage Assessment

  • Performance point with Annex 5B modal conversion and CR correction for short-period structures
  • Plastic rotation limits and section strain limits (TBDY 5.8.1)
  • Strain check in shear wall end regions
  • Member damage regions: Limited, Significant, Advanced Damage and Collapse
  • Storey-by-storey building performance verdict and rationale per TBDY 15.8

Multi-Mode Pushover and IRSA

  • Single-mode pushover conditions (mass participation ≥ 70%, ηbi ≤ 1.4) are checked automatically and reported
  • Multi-mode pushover (TBDY 5.6.6): modal pushovers and end plastic rotations combined with CQC
  • The elastic consistency condition (TBDY 5.6.6.1) is shown numerically in every analysis
  • IRSA incremental mode combination method
  • Adaptive (variable) single-mode pushover (TBDY 5.6.5) and P-Δ (second-order) options

3D Tracking of Damage

  • Deformed shape step by step along the pushover curve
  • Plastic hinges in damage region colors: Limited, Significant, Advanced Damage and Collapse
  • Base shear, roof displacement, number of hinges and building performance level at every step
  • The demand step is marked separately; the sequence of hinge formation is easy to follow

Verification with SAP2000

  • The same model and hinges are transferred automatically to SAP2000 and pushed independently
  • Pushover curves of the two programs, hinge states at the demand point and base shears side by side
  • If desired, the calculation continues with the SAP2000 solution; demand, damage and report are still produced in StatiCAD with the TBDY chain
  • Without SAP2000, all analyses and reports are obtained with the StatiCAD solver

Step-by-step guide: How to Perform a Nonlinear Pushover Analysis (Knowledge Base)

How Does It Work?

  1. Model the existing building; enter the sections, reinforcement and the material strengths determined on site.
  2. Turn on RC performance analysis in Project General Settings, select the knowledge level and run the analysis. The linear assessment report is ready at this stage.
  3. In the Nonlinear Pushover Analysis window, set the direction combinations and options (strain-hardening hinge, multi-mode pushover, IRSA, P-Δ) and start the pushover.
  4. Review the pushover curve, the performance point and the 3D damage distribution for each direction; get the report of the selected direction.
  5. If the building is inadequate, define the retrofit in the same project and redo the analysis in its retrofitted state.

Reports

A detailed report for each direction combination, which can be previewed and saved as PDF:

  • Pushover curve and modal capacity–demand diagram
  • Seismic demand calculation and applicability checks (ηbi, mass participation)
  • Member-by-member plastic rotation and damage region tables
  • Material models and shear wall end region strain checks
  • Multi-mode pushover and IRSA summaries, storey drift profile
  • Building performance level and the rationale of the verdict

Verification

The StatiCAD pushover engine has been verified with automatic model-to-model comparisons against SAP2000 V27. At the demand point where the engineering verdict is made, the two programs produce the same roof displacement and matching damage tables; the building verdict is identical in seven of the eight direction combinations. The only difference is a borderline case where the demand coincides exactly with the yield limit.

Curve peak-to-base-shear ratios are in the 0.89–0.93 band for unidirectional pushovers, and StatiCAD is consistently on the safe side. The same comparisons can be reproduced in every project with the “Verify with SAP2000” option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which code is RC building performance analysis based on?

Existing reinforced concrete buildings are assessed per TBDY 2018 Chapter 15. In deformation-based assessment, Chapter 5 with Annex 5A (material models) and Annex 5B (seismic demand) is applied; the building performance level verdict is given with the rules in 15.8.

Should I use the linear method or pushover analysis?

TBDY 2018 allows both routes; the choice depends on the characteristics of the building and the engineer’s judgment. In StatiCAD, on the same model you can run the linear assessment first, then the nonlinear pushover analysis, and compare the results.

What happens if the single-mode pushover conditions are not met?

If the mass participation of the dominant mode is below 70%, or the torsional irregularity coefficient ηbi exceeds 1.4, this is clearly flagged in the report. For these buildings, assessment can be made per TBDY 5.6.6 with multi-mode pushover or the IRSA method.

Is SAP2000 required for pushover analysis?

No. All analyses and reports are performed with StatiCAD’s own solver. If SAP2000 V27 is installed and licensed on your computer, additional options are available to compare results with an independent solver or to continue the calculation with the SAP2000 solution.

Can retrofitting be designed after the performance analysis?

Yes. Retrofitting is defined on members in the same project file and included in the calculation with a single option; results before and after retrofitting are compared in the report. See the RC Retrofitting page for details.

Which StatiCAD edition includes it?

The RC performance analysis and retrofitting module is included in the Ultimate, Profesyonel and Betonarme editions. With the free demo version you can try the workflow on your own project.
